DORAVILLE

This one was a challenge, which is probably why I liked it so much.

The garden sits in a courtyard at the bottom of a fairly complicated site. Most of the water behind the house eventually moves through this space, so the drainage had to be worked out at the same time as the concrete, walls, steps and planting. There was a lot of concrete to pour and a lot of geometry to get right.

We built the fireplace with a brick veneer to match the existing walls, installed the linear gas fire and set the wood mantle into the masonry as it was built. The steel planters were fabricated and welded in place, and we built an outdoor kitchen as part of the courtyard.

The homeowners wanted the space to work for family and friends and, for sure, watching sports.

It’s in a great little neighborhood of mostly midcentury modern houses tucked back off Chamblee Tucker Road.
