NW ATLANTA

The house was designed by architect Philip Babb, and the landscape plan was already in place when we came to the project. The problem was that it felt like a two-dimensional plan for a very three-dimensional place, so we reworked much of it as we built.

The architecture gave us plenty to work with. We pulled geometry from the house into the paving, walls, steps and planting. There were a lot of elevations and relationships to work through, and getting those right became a big part of the garden. It’s very modern, but it never felt like it needed to be severe.

Kim and Zach are serious barbecue people and kept us supplied with DAS BBQ during construction, which certainly didn’t hurt.

The house and garden were later included on the Modern Atlanta Home Tour. I love this one.
