This backyard redesign was about starting fresh. After decades in a Manhattan apartment, the homeowners moved to Atlanta and sought a calm, modern outdoor space that offered privacy, low maintenance, and a welcoming layout for their dog. The existing backyard — cluttered with old hardscape, dense overgrowth, and a deteriorating shed — needed a complete overhaul. The vision was clear: create a sleek, contemporary retreat with clean lines, practical features, and a sense of serenity.

To deliver on that vision, the team cleared outdated elements and preserved only select remnants for historical continuity. Modern stucco walls serve as both planter beds and seat walls, while Pennsylvania bluestone defines a larger patio space. A beloved existing water feature was retained for a personal touch, and minimal plantings—along with a perennial strip for seasonal refresh—keep maintenance low. A sleek contemporary fence enhances privacy and secures a small lawn area for the family dog. Despite complex drainage issues and the presence of a municipal stormwater structure, the final design achieves a seamless, modern feel—combining engineering solutions with aesthetic clarity to create a backyard that feels both peaceful and purposeful.
